In 2004, George W. Bush re-election campaign sunk the fledging campaign of John Kerry, when a gang of Bush passes swift boated him with accusations of flip flopping. Kerry had been for a tax before he was against it. Mitt Romney, the 2012 presumptive Republican Presidential nominee is however the King of Flipping and Flopping. It is not sure what kind of water Massachusettsans drive or if there is a flipping and flopping gene afloat in the Boston area air, but Politicians from the New England State sure know how to get it going.
John Kerry, and his Presidential run is now history, but let's look at Mitt Romney. The man who claims to be the most altruistic, non politician, since before the birth of Politics is indeed a 65 year hold with almost 20 years political history. The man has been running for Political office since 1992 - He lost an election to Edward Kennedy in 1994, remember. Somehow, his failure to win elections has become his credentials to be "not a politician" or "washington outsider". Outsider, we all know he is not.
In the 1994 election loss, Romney was more liberal than Edward Kennedy on all social issues including on the issue of choice, on the issue of gay rights, and even on the issue of immigration. Indeed, Romney's love for Plan Parenthood , even until just 6 years ago is well documented, including by his wife's card carrying membership and several donations over the years to the organization - a bragging right useful for winning over skeptical lefties. Then the man became Governor, and pass the nation's first almost-single-payer health care law, which later became a template for the Affordable Care Act. The man, even in 2009 was writing articles recommending the new Democratic administration consider the Massachusetts law as a model. Of course, he had "illegal aliens" working on his vast estate - how else was he going to keep those lawn well manicured?, but in order to be on the far-right of cranky old man McCain during the 2008 Presidential election cycle, he was anti-illegal immigration.
But all the flipping of 2008 pale in comparison to what we have seen so far this election cycle. Suddenly, Mitt Romney became more anti immigrant than Rick Santorum, more anti-Gay than Rick Perry, more anti-health care law than Michelle Beckman, and here this, more anti-contraceptives than Rick Santorum and Michelle Backman combined!! Even an olympic gymnast will find this rate of flipping mind boggling. In March, Mitt's immigration policy was summed up in these few words "let them self deport". He favors making life so difficult to "illegal immigrants" that they will be compelled to self deport. Indeed, he even went as far as to promise to veto the "Dream Act", if it ever gets to his desk as President. That was in Spring of 2012. By Summer, he had flipped!!!
Interestingly, no one seems surprised by the man's ability to reverse himself for expediency. He will say whatever he thinks people want to hear, and do whatever he feels will advance his political career. He will go to bed with any kind of strange fellows and uphold any kind of ideological position, so long as his personal political ambitions can be moved forward, a little. So far, he has out-achieved his father who lost the Republican nomination to Richard Nixon, who eventually won the Presidency in '68.
Mitt Romney's life, the subject of many articles, and I expect, will be come the subject of many books, is indeed an all American story of riches to more riches. It is a story of unabashed, unapologetic ambition, and a storied history of flipping and flopping. But for a Republican party that ridiculed Kerry's "Was for it by was against it" statement just 8 years ago to be salivating over the King of Flops is a telling tale of how a party and its ideology could cloud a people's judgement.
Mitt Romney's run for Presidency is about Mitt Romney, and no one else, as the Republican party and a disillusioned nation may come to find out in the unlikely event that the unlucky happens to us, the United States. Romney has no useful business experience, other then the experience of sucking life out of ailing companies. Romney has no governing experience other than rubber stamping (yes, even with his multitudes of vetoes) a majority Democratic legislation in Massachusetts, and for those touting Salt Lake City - really, how much worse could it get?
Mr. Romney Flipps. And just a few days after Mr. Obama upended his immigration strategy by enacting the Dream Act as an administrative procedure, Mr. Romney suddenly become "soft on illegals!" The man has flipping courage!
